18th Century Continental Oak Trunk or Chest. Flemish tapestry of village landscape with hinged panel door, wrought iron handles, nail head studded ledges. Europe, ca. 1780. Wear consistant with age of 18th Century furniture, and in good condition, 28 1/4" x 35" x 19". Estate of Ambassador and Mrs. William H.G. Fitzgerald, Washing DC, by descent from Ignaz Petschek and Nikodem Caro, Austro-Hungarian Empire. According to VisitFlanders.co.uk, by the 16th century, Flanders had become the center of European tapestry production. In the 17th century Flemish tapestries were arguably the most important productions, with many specimens of this era demonstrating the intricate detail of pattern and color. Most of the tapestries have religious, mythological and historical subjects as well as hunting and harvest scenes. They are known for their high quality and extended use of colors. The oldest ones were made in the 13th century. The most important production centers were Doornik and Arras.
