Yoruba / Nigeria Gelede Wooden Body Mask of Iya Nla
Monumental Yoruba - Nigeria Gelede Wooden Body Mask of Iya Nla (Great Powerful Mother) Early 20th Century 54 H x 21" wide. Arms are available. Kept inside the Gelede Shrine, not danced but carried on a platform during Gelede, an annual festival honoring “our mothers” (awon iya wa), not so much for their motherhood, but as female elders. It takes place in the dry season (March-May) among the Yoruba people of south-west Nigeria and neighboring southeast Benin. Artifact in excellent condition.
