Near East, Islamic, Stone Foreparts of a Leaping Lion, ca. 1100 - 1200 CE. Pleasing face with protruding tongue. In action as if attacking prey. 4 1/4" x 3 1/2" x 2 1/2", on custom stand 4" high. In excellent condition. Back is lopped, fragment as seen in images. Ex: S. Beiner collection, Florida. According to Syrian Cultural Tourism, the lion has long been a symbol of Islamic Healdry. The Aleppo citadel has a twin lion on either side of the door. Lions were long venerated in the Near East and were used by various rulers as symbols of Royal authority, much as they were in Europe.
