Sumerian Stone Head of a Lion, Seal, Stamp, Late Uruk / Jemdet Nasr Period, ca. 3100 - 2900 BCE. In profile, with pursed mouth, whiskers, hollow eye, and pricked ears. 1 1/8" x 1 1/8" x 1/4", on stand 3 3/4" high. In excellent condition. Ex: S. Beiner collection, Florida. Sumer is the earliest known civilization in the historical region of southern Mesopotamia, modern-day southern Iraq, during the Chalcolithic and Early Bronze ages, and arguably one of the first civilizations in the world along with Ancient Egypt and the Indus Valley.
