Rhodian Pottery Head of a Lion Aryballos, Archaic Period, ca. Early 6th Century BCE. Intact and in excellent condition. 2 3/4" x 2 3/4" x 2 1/4", on stand 4 1/2" high. Purchased at Christie's New York. Ex: Leo Mildenberg collection of Ancient Animals, Published Literature: More Animals in Ancient Art from the Leo Mildenberg collection., Part II, Mainz am Rhein, 1986, no. 65. Authored by A.P. Kozloff, D. G. Mitten, and M. Squaitamatti. The Leo Mildenberg Collection of Ancient Animals was exhibited in numerous cities, spanning three continents, from 1981 onward and led to a series of publication to coincide with these events. Individual pieces were also the subject of scholarly articles and museum loan. Leo Mildenberg was a generous museum benefactor, gifting over 40 of his finest object to museum worldwide including the Bible Land Museum, Israel Museum, Cleveland Museum of Art, Indiana University Art Museum, Harvard University, Antiken Museum Basle, Archaeolgischen Institut der Universitat Zurich, Institut fur Klassiche Archaologie Tubingen, Prahistorische Sammlung Munich, Antikenmuseum, Berlin, Institut Biblique France, The University of Haifa Reuben and Edith Hecht Museum and the Shefton Museum, and Newcastle University.
