Sasanian Silver Figure of a Lion, ca. 6th - 7th Century CE. Intact and in excellent condition. 2" x 3 3/4" x 1 1/4". Finely incised with expressive face and curly mane. Tail curves over back. Ex: S. Beiner collection, Florida. The Sasanian Empire was the last kingdom of the Persian Empire before the rise of Islam, and was named after the House of Sasan; it ruled from 224 to 651 CE. The Sasanian Empire succeeded the Parthian Empire and was recognised as one of the leading world powers alongside its neighboring arch-rival the Roman-Byzantine Empire for a period of more than 400 years.
