Monumental Eastern Roman Empire Mottled Gray Marble Funerary Statue of Cybele, goddess of Nature & Fertility flanked by set of lions. Two line Greek inscription on front base. circa 3rd Century CE. Under the emperor Augustus (63 BCE - 14 CE,) Cybele enjoyed great prominence thanks to her inclusion in Augustan ideology. Augustus restored Cybele's temple, which was located next to his own palace on the Palatine Hill. 21" high on custom stand. In excellent condition and very heavy marble! Ex: Bonham's New York
