Ming Dynasty finely carved stone head of Guan Yin, China (1368 - 1644 CE) Rounded face, lovely almond eyes and elongated ears, curled lips, hair in chignon surmounted by conical headdress. Ex: A. Lamm collection, New York. In excellent condition. 12" high. Guan Yin (also spelled Kwan Yin) is the Chinese name of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of compassion and mercy. His full name is Guanshiyin which means "Observing the sounds (or cries) of the world." He represents mercy and compassion and is popular in the East and the West.
