Exceptionally carved with crisply delineated facial features and pursed lips. Large almond shaped eyes, curled strands of incised hair rising to conical topknot. Head is 6 1/2" high x 4" diameter, 8" including custom stand. Circa 2nd - 3rd Century C.E., $4,000, in excellent condition. Gandhara was an ancient kingdom in the Swat, Peshewar, Rawalpindi, Ghazni, Kandahar and Kabul river valleys and the Pothohar Plateau, in modern-day states of northern Pakistan and northeastern Afghanistan. Its main cities were Purushapura (modern Peshawar), literally meaning "city of men", and Takshashila (modern Taxila). The cities of Gardez and Jalalabad were also tied to Gandhâra.
