Urartian (Uratu, Kingdom of Van, Northern Iran) Gray Pottery Square Sided Bottle Figure riding a Horse, ca 9th - 8th Century BCE. 7 3/4" high. Ex: Bonham's Knightbridge. Slender rectangular bottle with tubular neck and broad rim. Sides and back of bottle with incised circles with central dots. Bottle rests on swayed back of horse. Although the horse appears on Urartian objects, its association with cosmetic containers is not yet understood. Cf: Ancient Iranian Ceramics from the Arthur M. Sackler collections by Trudy S.
